I found this interesting quote in the reading. It caught my attention.
"Oppressing is oppressing to those who oppress as well as those they oppress".
The quote means that the people who are doing the oppressing are also oppress. Like how you can say women are oppressed by society's guidelines of how they should act and look-so too are males. They also are oppressed by their masculine image of being tough...etc. So both groups are being oppressed by each other, because of society's image of gender. Its a circle that keeps going around and around. So how do you end it? Maybe both parties shouldn't believe those stereotypes of the opposite gender?
Let me know what you think and what the answer is- if there is one.
That's a very good question, and a hard one to answer. I don't believe it's something that we can fix in everyone, but an individual has to want change. If you don't believe in the stereotypes, then that's one more person that is doing something right.
ReplyDeleteI believe there is no answer to the question you have asked. Even if people tried to forget the stereotypes about the opposite sex, there would always be at least one person still thinking the old way. I believe it is almost impossible to get rid of the stereotypes that have been around for a long long time because people have different opinions about everything, making it difficult to agree.
ReplyDeleteI as well agree that there would be no answer to this question. I don't think that there will ever be an end to stereotypes. It does suck but no matter what there will still be people out there stereotyping everyone.
ReplyDeleteI think that if women and men don't want to be stereotyped then they should stop fitting stereotypes. For example, if you don't want the color pink to be related to females, then stop buying pink for new born baby girls. Or if a girl wants to try out for the football team, she should try out for the football team. This would stop social "barriers" and reduce stereotypical behavior, therefore reducing stereotypes.
